  • CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.

Few structures have as much influence over the body's ability to function properly as the brain and spinal cord that make up the central nervous system. And, the central nervous system is heavily influenced by the CranioSacral system - the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord.

Every day your body endures stresses and strains that it must work to compensate for. Unfortunately, these changes often cause body tissues to tighten and distort the CranioSacral system. These distortions can then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord resulting in restrictions. This can create a barrier to the healthy performance of the central nervous system, and potentially every other system it interacts with.

Fortunately, such restrictions can be detected and corrected using simple methods of touch. With a light touch, the CST practitioner uses his or her hands to evaluate the CranioSacral system by gently feeling various locations of the body to test for the ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. Soft-touch techniques are then used to release restrictions in any tissues influencing the CranioSacral system.

By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord and enhancing the body's ability to self-correct, CranioSacral Therapy is able to alleviate a wide variety of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological impairment.

  • Somato Emotional Release

SomatoEmotional Release is defined by Dr. John Upledger, the founder of CranioSacral Therapy as: the expression of emotion that, for reasons deemed appropriate by some part of the patient’s or client’s nonconscious, has been retained, suppressed and isolated within the soma.

It is well-known in the world of CranioSacral Therapy that emotions trapped in body tissues can lead to pain and other ailments. Emotions have a powerful effect on our psyches, as well as our bodies. Positive/constructive emotions generate a sense of lightness and ease of movement. They can manifest as a desire to run, sing, smile and even dance. Negative/destructive emotions also generate body responses. They cause our shoulders to slump, our muscles to contract and our blood pressure to rise.

When we experience sadness, anger, resentment, loneliness or sorrow, we feel it deeply. And because it hurts, we sometimes suppress those parts of ourselves to keep the pain from intensifying or spreading. Imbalances often occur when we resist an emotion and its natural path through the body. Resistance can cause an emotion to lock into body tissue, eventually leading to physical ailments.

There are a variety of ways to release trapped emotions: journaling, talk therapy or even exercise. But the most reliable method of is SomatoEmotional Release (SER), that it was developed by Dr John E. Upledger. SER was designed specifically to release trapped emotions and allow the physical ailments that often accompany them to resolve naturally. The powerful results often include improved body functioning, loss of pain, greater mobility and more enjoyment of life.

  • Reiki & Energy Work - In Person & Virtual Available

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

  • Mediumship/Psychic Reading

What is a Medium? What To Expect & More?

For all those who have wanted to connect with the other side or reach across the divide to communicate with past loved ones, a medium may be able to help. Mediums are believed to have the skills needed to bridge a gap between our realms and other realms. While popular narratives will simplify and say that mediums can speak to the dead, this is a loaded term - as instead of calling the dead back, a medium may see that they are able to become messengers and vessels for those who have transformed from physical beings into solely spiritual beings.

A medium is someone who has extrasensory capabilities and can tap into things unseen or unknown by our usual sense of perception. This may also be referred to as the sixth sense. A medium may be able to perceive and even interpret and communicate messages that come through paranormal channels. Some mediums are also able to speak or receive messages from souls on the other side and can interact with otherworldly, ethereal spirits. They can do this if they have vibrations that are high enough to connect to that other side.

  • Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage is a world known therapy slowly coming to light and becoming more acknowledged for all its benefits. It is a light manual touch accessing the surface waters of the body and sometimes deep pressure to access the underground rivers of the human structure.

The Lymphatic system is a core part of our immune system. It collects and reuses, helps to filter the waste that our body no longer needs or sees as foreign. Yet much like the venous system, our lymph system sometimes needs a little support. It can become sluggish by the stuff we consume, the stress we bear, the emotions that burden us or need some assistance by the sports we partake in, surgeries we need, conditions we’ve developed or have been born with as well as the nature of development through all the stages of life.

As humans, our bodies are composed of 60% water, the most abundant element. So doesn't it make sense that whatever we do in our daily activities of life would affect the fluids in our body? And doesn’t it make sense to support the natural function of that system so that we feel revived, renewed and recovered?

*Please note, we do not have a therapist that is certified to work with Lymphedema or Cancer patients, if this is your area of need please call or email the clinic and we can provide youwith a referral.*

  • Scar Mobilization

Scar tissue is the body’s natural method for healing tissues that have been injured. After injures such as fractures, broken bones, or surgeries the body needs to repair to its best ability and this involves laying down scar tissue. It is a beautiful mechanism yet one that needs assistance in the remodeling phase as we heal.

With scar mobilization or scar massage we can help these tissues realign better so they do not create lines of tension that can impede on our daily actives or the function of our bodies. Little or big, old or new almost all scars can affect areas of our bodies far from the actual scar sight.

Book in for your free 15 minute consultation to see scar mobilization can help you with your muscular pain, lack of range of motion or fascial restrictions.

  • TMJ Massage

TMJ or the Temporomandibular Joint is the working mechanism that assists the muscles that help us chew. Not all TMD or Temporomandibular Dysfunction is directly related to the joint.

Sometimes the muscles of mastication (chewing) can cause clenching or grinding, the pain we are feeling in the joint area, neck stiffness or the headache we are experiencing.

With massage to the muscles either on the exterior or interior of our mouth, pain and often headaches can be relieved while also helping with the range of motion. Massage for the TMJ is not often painful yet pain can occur when the muscles haven’t been released and are over worked.

  • Breast Massage

What is breast massage? Underneath our breast tissue lays the Pectoralis Muscles, pectoralis minor and major. As posture affects most of us, either from sitting at a desk, long durations of standing, activities such as biking, skiing or hiking with a heavy pack, we can all feel the effects of ‘rounded shoulders’. When we are in these habitual positions some muscles can get short and tight and others, long and tight.

This means we may experience difficultly straightening our back or pulling our shoulders back. For women in particular, when these muscles are ‘tight’ is can cause breast tenderness, swelling and/or congestion, poor posture or increased feeling of stress and/or anxiety.

With the help of gentle massage to the area the lymph fluid can then drain properly, muscles can relax and breath can become easier. Most women will walk away feeling lighter, taller and a sense of emotional ease. Taping is available to those that need added assistance for draining lymph fluid.

  • Reflexology

Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas on the feet and/or the hands. The theory behind reflexology is that areas of the foot correspond to organs and systems of the body. Pressure applied to the feet, hands and ears, is believed to bring relaxation and healing to the corresponding area/organ of the body, in order for a deeper level of healing to take place. Easing stress by connecting with acupressure points will leave you feeling extremely calm and rested. A beautiful therapeutic practice that can improve your body’s overall function and wellbeing.

  • Osteopathy - CURRENTLY HIRING FOR THIS POSITION - please email to enquire info@banffwellnesspractice.com

Osteopathy is a manual therapy with a holistic approach to wellness. It is rooted in a thorough understanding of human anatomy and the natural principles that govern it. Just as nature seeks to restore balance and harmony, the same is true for the human body. Many people think of “bones” when they hear the word “osteo”. And this is true, we work with bones, but more thoroughly, we look at all structures of the body to find the root cause of dysfunction.

Osteopathy is a unique manual therapy in that it uses the following four founding principles to guide assessment and treatment:

    1. The body is a functional unit:
The body is greater than the sum of its parts. We tend to think very segmentally when considering the body, but in reality, these various “segments” of the body are deeply interconnected. The result of dysfunction in the body is not only local. By looking at the body as a whole and not only at the area where symptoms arise the practitioner can find the root cause of dysfunction. This requires a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, mechanics and the bodies interrelations, as well as a systematic and in-depth assessment.

    2. The body has an innate capacity to find health:
The role of an OMT is not to fix a patient. We all have a strong ability to heal and express health. An OMT seeks to remove obstruction, and 'nudge' the patient's systems to regulate itself. With a thorough understanding of the body’s systems, including fascial, neurovascular, and musculoskeletal, the practitioner can use the patient’s physiology to restore normal function.

    3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated:
The structure of a given part will tell you about how it functions, and vice versa. Nothing in the body is by accident. An OMT works on the structure to ensure adequate function for optimal expression of health.

    4. The “highways” of the body help it to express health:
This simply means that the freedoms and capacity of the vessels (fluid highways) carrying blood and lymph, and the nerves are what dictate health. When restrictions exist in the body, these vessels become compromised and our capacity to express health is impacted. An OMT seeks to help remove restrictions so that the vessels carrying nutrients, removing waste, and providing innervation can optimally reach all areas of your body. In this manner, health is expressed!

What to expect in your first treatment:

Come wearing flexible, comfortable clothing (stretchy pants or shorts are great!). We will go through a thorough assessment including a comprehensive history taking and evaluation of your musculoskeletal, fascial, circulatory, and cranial systems. In this first session, you can plan on a bit more time in assessment, with a short treatment.

    Follow up treatments:

With all follow up sessions, we will do a quick full body assessment to see how your body has adapted and focus the session where the body is holding the greatest tensions. Since osteopathy looks at interrelationships within the body, it is not uncommon for us to look outside of the area of pain to discover root causes.

  • Acupuncture - CURRENTLY HIRING FOR THIS POSITION - please email to enquire info@banffwellnesspractice.com

Traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture involves the insertion of ultra-thin needles through the skin and into the fascial network at specific points along the body. These points are a communication system along meridians or energy pathways that date back over 3000 years. Your acupuncturist may combine needling with fire cupping, Chinese massage techniques called tuina or moxibustion; which is the burning of an herb called mugwort, to address your individual and specific needs.

Chinese medicine looks at the root cause of ailments and disease, and treats the individual, so not one treatment looks exactly alike, and it is beneficial for anything from physical aches and pains, to mental and emotional health, hormonal balance, metabolic conditions, and the list goes on.

Acupuncture works on the nervous system by harmonizing or balancing the flow of what is deemed in eastern medicine as life force energy or Qi - pronounced “chee”. Qi exists not only within the human body but also makes up the entire natural world around us and is represented in all its forms by the seasons (5 in fact), and how they may affect our internal systems and the overall experience of our lives.
